Schweppes is one of the world's oldest soft drink and mixer brands, with an illustrious history dating back to 1783 when Johann Jacob Schweppe developed a process to manufacture carbonated mineral water in Geneva, Switzerland. Schweppe relocated to London in 1792 to commercialize his sparkling water, creating the basis for the modern mixer category and earning a Royal Warrant in the nineteenth century.
Over the centuries, Schweppes grew into an international powerhouse, later merging with Cadbury to form Cadbury Schweppes. In 1999, Cadbury Schweppes sold the international beverage brand rights across roughly 150 countries to The Coca-Cola Company. In the United Kingdom and across most of Europe, brand ownership of Schweppes was acquired by The Coca-Cola Company. British bottling, distribution, and local production are primarily handled by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) at facilities across Great Britain.
Because of historic antitrust and licensing decisions, brand ownership of Schweppes is split globally. In North America (the United States and Canada), Schweppes is owned by Keurig Dr Pepper. In mainland Europe, Suntory Beverage & Food owns the trademark in countries like France and Spain, while Asahi Group owns the brand in Australia. In the United Kingdom, however, the brand remains firmly in the portfolio of The Coca-Cola Company.
