The Arla brand has dual Scandinavian roots dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, stemming from cooperative dairies in Sweden (Mjölkcentralen, later named Arla) and Denmark (Mejeriselskabet Danmark / MD Foods). In 2000, Swedish Arla and Danish MD Foods merged to form Arla Foods amba.

Today, Arla Foods amba operates as a massive multinational dairy cooperative headquartered in Viby, Denmark, collectively owned by thousands of dairy farmers across Denmark, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.
