Introduced in 1977 by Daimler-Benz AG, the T1 became widely popular across Europe for commercial freight, passenger transport, and conversion into camper vans due to its durability and practical design.

Today, the Mercedes-Benz brand and its van division are owned by Mercedes-Benz Group AG (formerly Daimler AG), headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany. The T1 was ultimately succeeded by the widely recognized Mercedes-Benz Sprinter series in 1995.
