Ecofiltro Water Filtration System

Ecofiltro is a renowned sustainable water filtration brand originally created in Guatemala. The filter concept was developed by Guatemalan scientist Dr. José Fernando Mazariegos in the 1980s under a project sponsored by the Central American Institute of Industrial Research and Technology (ICAITI). The initiative aimed to provide a low-cost, effective, and environmentally friendly drinking water solution for rural communities. In the late 2000s, social entrepreneur Philip Wilson transformed the project into a social enterprise, founding Ecofiltro S.A. to scale the production and distribution of the filters via a hybrid business model where urban commercial sales help subsidize distribution in rural communities.

Ecofiltro products, including their signature ceramic filter elements made from clay, colloidal silver, and sawdust (activated carbon), are manufactured in Guatemala at the company's dedicated production facility in Antigua Guatemala. The finished units are housed in various containers such as ceramic, pewter, clay, and stainless steel.

Ecofiltro remains an independent social enterprise headquartered in Guatemala, operating under Ecofiltro S.A. In international markets, including the United States and Europe, the brand operates via regional distribution and subsidiary partners such as Ecofiltro USA to supply sustainable, gravity-fed water purifiers to eco-conscious consumers.
