The brand was originally established in the United States during the mid-20th century under Swift & Company, famous for popularizing pre-basted, tenderized turkeys designed for easy roasting.

In the Canadian retail market, the Butterball brand operates through a dedicated regional arrangement. While Butterball LLC produces and markets the brand in the United States (as a joint venture between Seaboard Corporation and Goldsboro Milling Company), the rights to produce, process, and distribute Butterball branded turkey products in Canada belong exclusively to Exceldor Cooperative.

Canadian Butterball turkeys are raised by Canadian turkey farmers and processed locally in Canadian facilities, meeting national poultry supply management standards and carrying the 'Quality Canadian Turkey' seal. This domestic supply chain ensures that Butterball products found in Canadian grocery stores are raised, slaughtered, and packaged domestically in Canada by Exceldor Cooperative.
