Thorens is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious names in high-fidelity audio, specifically renowned for its high-quality turntables. Founded in 1883 in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland, the company began by manufacturing musical boxes and clock movements before moving into phonographs and eventually becoming a pioneer in the vinyl playback industry.

Over the decades, Thorens became synonymous with Swiss precision engineering. In the late 20th century, production was often moved to Germany to capitalize on the region's technical expertise in audio manufacturing. The brand faced several financial transitions as the digital era emerged, but it successfully pivoted to cater to the high-end audiophile market that values analog sound.

In 2018, the brand underwent a significant revitalisation when it was acquired by Gunter Kürten, a former CEO of ELAC and Denon. Under this new ownership, the headquarters moved to Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. While the brand maintains its Swiss heritage and design philosophy, modern manufacturing is primarily centered in Germany, ensuring that the legacy of precision and durability continues for modern vinyl enthusiasts.
