Bluesky is a decentralized social media platform that originated as an internal initiative within Twitter in 2019. It eventually transitioned into an independent public benefit corporation. The platform is built on the AT Protocol (Authenticated Transfer Protocol), which aims to provide users with more control over their data and social media experience through decentralization.

While originally funded and supported by Twitter under Jack Dorsey's leadership, Bluesky PBLLC became a fully independent entity in 2022. The development of its software and servers are primarily managed and hosted within the United States. Today, it operates without an ultimate corporate parent in the traditional conglomerate sense, functioning as a mission-driven corporation.
