Brand History and Origin

Oakley was founded by James Jannard in 1975 in his garage, starting with a specialized motorcycle grip. The brand quickly evolved into a leader in performance eyewear, particularly known for its innovative designs that blend high-performance functionality with lifestyle aesthetics. The Holbrook model, pictured here, is one of Oakley's most iconic designs, inspired by the screen heroes from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s.

Manufacturing and Ownership

Historically, Oakley was famous for manufacturing almost all of its products in the United States at its headquarters in Foothill Ranch, California. However, following its acquisition by the Italian eyewear giant Luxottica (now EssilorLuxottica) in 2007, production has been distributed globally. While many performance sunglasses are still assembled in the USA, components and various models are also manufactured in Italy and China to leverage EssilorLuxottica's extensive global supply chain.

Current Corporate Structure

Today, Oakley is a key brand within the EssilorLuxottica portfolio, the world's largest eyewear company. Based in Paris, France, and Milan, Italy, the parent company manages the entire lifecycle of the product, from design and manufacturing to retail distribution through its various channels. In Mexico and other regions, the brand is typically distributed through EssilorLuxottica's local subsidiaries or authorized retailers like Sunglass Hut.
