The brand was initially launched by Unilever in the Netherlands as a response to medical concerns regarding saturated fats.

In 2018, Unilever sold its global spreads business to KKR, a private equity firm, which formed a new independent company called Upfield. Today, Upfield is the ultimate owner and global producer of Becel. In Canada, where the product in the image is specifically labeled 'Made in Canada', the manufacturing is handled locally to serve the North American market, often utilizing Canadian-grown canola oil. Upfield continues to lead the market in plant-based spreads and butters with a focus on sustainable sourcing and health-conscious food solutions.
