NOMOS Glashütte watches

NOMOS Glashütte is a prominent German watch manufacturer based in the historic watchmaking town of Glashütte, Saxony. Founded in 1990 by Roland Schwertner just months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it is celebrated for its minimalist design language heavily influenced by the Bauhaus and Deutscher Werkbund movements. The brand is a pioneer in the modern era of German horology, being the first to be newly established in the region following German reunification.

Manufacturing takes place almost entirely within Glashütte to meet the strict legal 'Glashütte' designation, which requires at least 50% of the movement's value to be created locally; NOMOS exceeds this by producing up to 95% of its calibers in-house. While the core watchmaking and assembly occur in Saxony, the brand's design and branding strategy are led by its dedicated creative agency, Berlinerblau, located in Berlin. This 'Berlin-to-Glashütte' pipeline allows the brand to combine cosmopolitan creative design with traditional mechanical expertise.

Unlike many of its neighbors in the luxury watch industry that have been absorbed into large conglomerates, NOMOS Glashütte remains a fiercely independent, owner-operated company. It is currently managed by a trio of partners: founder Roland Schwertner, CEO Uwe Ahrendt, and Head of Branding Judith Borowski. This independence has allowed the brand to invest heavily in self-sufficient technology, such as the proprietary 'NOMOS Swing System' escapement, ensuring its status as a vertically integrated manufacture in the global market.
