Subaru is a renowned Japanese automotive brand that trace its roots back to the Nakajima Aircraft Company, which was reorganized into Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) after World War II. The brand was officially launched with the introduction of its first car, the Subaru 1500, in 1954. Over the decades, Subaru has distinguished itself through its commitment to Boxer engines and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive technology, earning a loyal following for safety and performance.
Manufacturing for Subaru vehicles is concentrated in two primary hubs: the Gunma Prefecture in Japan and the Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) plant in the United States. While the Japanese facilities handle global supply, the U.S. plant is a critical production center for the North American market. In 2017, the parent company Fuji Heavy Industries officially changed its name to Subaru Corporation to align its corporate identity with its most successful enterprise.
Today, Subaru Corporation remains the ultimate owner of the brand. While Toyota Motor Corporation holds a significant minority stake (approximately 20%), Subaru operates as an independent brand with its own manufacturing and design philosophies. The brand continues to expand its lineup with a focus on rugged SUVs, crossovers, and its burgeoning Solterra electric vehicle line.
