Kiehl's has a storied history that began in 1851 as a single apothecary in Manhattan’s East Village, founded by John Kiehl. The brand was later expanded by the Morse family, who transformed it from a traditional pharmacy into a specialized skincare and body care line. Known for its minimalist packaging, generous sampling policy, and scientific approach to natural ingredients, Kiehl's built a loyal following as a quintessential New York heritage brand.
In April 2000, Kiehl's was acquired by the French beauty conglomerate L'Oréal. Under L'Oréal's ownership, the brand transitioned from a single flagship location to a global powerhouse with hundreds of standalone stores and retail counters worldwide.
Today, Kiehl's manufacturing is a global operation. While its historical roots and a significant portion of production—including iconic products like 'Creme de Corps'—remain in the United States (specifically New Jersey), L'Oréal utilizes its international manufacturing network to produce Kiehl's items in France, Germany, and several Asian markets to meet global demand efficiently. Despite this corporate growth, the brand maintains its signature 'apothecary' aesthetic and personal service traditions.
