Toblerone was created in 1908 in Bern, Switzerland, by Theodor Tobler and his cousin Emil Baumann. They invented the distinctive triangular chocolate bar combining milk chocolate, nougat, almonds, and honey. The iconic shape is famously associated with the Matterhorn mountain in the Swiss Alps, which long adorned its packaging.
For most of its history, Toblerone was exclusively manufactured in Bern, Switzerland. Following strict "Swissness" legislation enacted to protect products labeled as Swiss-made, parent company Mondelēz International shifted a portion of production to Bratislava, Slovakia, in 2023, while maintaining substantial manufacturing capacity in Bern. As a result, certain packaging designs have been adjusted to reflect "established in Switzerland" rather than "of Switzerland".
The Tobler company merged with Suchard in 1970 to form Interfood, which later merged with the Jacobs coffee company to form Jacobs Suchard in 1982. In 1990, Jacobs Suchard was acquired by Kraft Foods. In 2012, Kraft Foods split into two independent publicly traded corporations, with its global snacking and confectionery operations becoming Mondelēz International, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
