The Pescanova brand originated in 1960 in Vigo, Galicia (Spain), founded by José Fernández López. The company revolutionized frozen and processed seafood by pioneering the use of onboard freezing trawlers.

Today, the brand operates under Nueva Pescanova, S.L., a major multinational seafood enterprise headquartered in Chapela, Redondela (Pontevedra, Spain). The primary shareholder and ultimate owner is the Spanish financial institution ABANCA Corporación Bancaria, S.A., which took a controlling interest following corporate restructurings in the late 2010s and early 2020s.
