Total Commander

Total Commander is a legendary file manager for Windows, Android, and Windows Phone, originally released in 1993 under the name Windows Commander. Developed by Christian Ghisler, the software was created as a shareware alternative to the classic Norton Commander, providing a two-pane interface that enhances productivity for power users and IT professionals.

In 2002, the name was changed from Windows Commander to Total Commander due to potential trademark issues with Microsoft. The software is developed and maintained by Ghisler Software GmbH, based in Switzerland. Unlike many modern software products owned by massive multinational conglomerates, Total Commander remains under the direct stewardship of its original creator, representing a long-standing tradition of independent software development.
