The brand traces its roots back to 1858 when it was founded by Hiram Walker in Detroit, though production moved to Windsor, Ontario, shortly after to avoid prohibition laws in the United States. It became a staple of North American spirits and gained worldwide recognition during the Prohibition era as a high-quality smuggled spirit.

Today, the brand is a cornerstone of the global spirits portfolio of Beam Suntory, which was formed when the Japanese powerhouse Suntory Holdings acquired the American company Beam Inc. in 2014. While the core whisky is distilled in Canada, the pre-mixed cans and bottles are often manufactured and canned in the local markets where they are sold—most notably in Australia and Canada—to ensure freshness and reduce shipping costs.
