Marktplaats is the leading online classifieds platform in the Netherlands, established in 1999. Originally founded by Rene van Mullem, it quickly grew to become the primary destination for Dutch consumers to buy and sell second-hand goods, ranging from household items to vehicles and services.

In 2004, the platform was acquired by the American e-commerce giant eBay, which integrated it into its global portfolio for nearly two decades. However, following a major strategic shift in the global classifieds industry, the ownership transferred to Adevinta, a specialized global online classifieds company headquartered in Norway.

Today, Marktplaats remains a digital service developed and managed within the Netherlands, maintaining its local identity while benefiting from the technological infrastructure of its international parent company. As of 2024, the platform is part of the Adevinta group, which is currently undergoing further privatization through a consortium led by investment firms Blackstone and Permira, ensuring its continued dominance in the European digital marketplace.
