The brand is renowned for its traditional churned butter method, specifically using the Fritz Churn process, which creates a rich flavor and golden color attributed to the grass-fed cows that graze in the region's high-rainfall pastures.

The product is manufactured and packaged in New Zealand, primarily at facilities located in Hokitika. Westgold has grown from a local cooperative brand into a globally recognized label, exported to numerous countries across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, maintaining a reputation for high-quality, natural ingredients without artificial additives.

Ownership of the brand belongs to Westland Milk Products, which was historically a farmer-owned cooperative. In 2019, the company was acquired by the Yili Group, one of the world's largest dairy entities. This acquisition provided the capital and distribution network necessary to scale Westgold's presence internationally while keeping the core production grounded in its original New Zealand terroir.
