The brand is credited with inventing the modern technical backpack, including the first internal frame, compression straps, and load stabilizers. These innovations revolutionized how mountaineers and hikers carried heavy loads in demanding terrain.

While the brand originated in the United States, its ownership and operational headquarters moved to the United Kingdom in the late 1980s. Since 2011, Lowe Alpine has been owned by Equip Outdoor Technologies UK Ltd, which also owns the Rab brand. Today, the company's international headquarters are located in Kendal, Cumbria, United Kingdom. Manufacturing is conducted across multiple locations globally, including specialized facilities in Asia and Europe, following the industry standard for technical outdoor gear.

Under its current ownership, Lowe Alpine has refocused its product line exclusively on high-performance backpacks and carrying systems, phasing out its apparel lines to concentrate on its heritage of engineering excellence in pack technology.
