Assos of Switzerland is a premier brand in the high-performance cycling industry, widely credited with revolutionizing modern cycling wear. Founded in 1976 by Toni Maier-Moussa in Winterthur, Switzerland, the company moved its headquarters to San Pietro di Stabio in the Ticino region in the early 1980s. Maier-Moussa was a pioneer who developed the first carbon fiber bicycle frame and, subsequently, the first Lycra (spandex) cycling shorts, which replaced the traditional wool shorts of that era.

While the brand maintains its design, research, and development labs in Switzerland to uphold its "engineered in Switzerland" reputation, the bulk of its manufacturing shifted to Europe to meet global demand, with Romania serving as a primary production hub. The brand remains synonymous with technical innovation, such as the development of the first sublimation-printed jerseys and elastic interface chamois pads.

In 2015, the Maier family transitioned from full ownership by selling a majority stake to an investment consortium. This group is led by Philip N. Duff, a former executive at Morgan Stanley and Black Diamond Equipment, alongside the New York-based private equity firm TZP Group and other investors. Despite this change in corporate ownership, the brand continues to operate from its Swiss headquarters, maintaining its heritage of precision and luxury in the athletic apparel market into 2026.
