KaiOS

KaiOS is a web-based mobile operating system designed for 'smart feature phones' that use physical keypads and non-touch screens. It focuses on bridging the digital divide by providing smartphone-like features on low-cost hardware. Originally developed as a fork of Mozilla's discontinued Firefox OS (Boot to Gecko), it was launched in 2017 to bring internet access, 4G support, and popular apps like YouTube and Google Maps to emerging markets.

While the software is developed by KaiOS Technologies, which operates globally with major hubs in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the USA, the physical devices running the OS are manufactured by various third-party companies. Major hardware partners include HMD Global (Nokia), Alcatel, and Reliance Retail (JioPhone). Consequently, manufacturing occurs in multiple countries, primarily China and India, depending on the specific phone brand and model.

The brand has significant backing from global tech giants. In 2018, Google invested $22 million in the company to integrate its services, and Reliance Jio (India's largest telecom operator) holds a significant minority stake. As of 2026, it remains the primary platform for affordable smart feature phones globally.
