Aesop was founded in Melbourne, Australia, in 1987 by Dennis Paphitis. The brand quickly became known for its botanical ingredients, minimalist amber packaging, and distinctive retail environments. While Aesop has expanded globally, much of its product development and manufacturing remains centered in Australia.

Over the years, the brand's ownership has transitioned through major corporate groups. In 2012, the Brazilian cosmetics giant Natura & Co acquired a majority stake in Aesop, eventually taking full ownership in 2016. However, in a major industry shift in 2023, the French luxury group L'Oréal reached an agreement to acquire Aesop for over $2.5 billion. Today, Aesop operates as a high-end luxury brand within the L'Oréal portfolio, maintaining its headquarters and creative heart in Australia while benefiting from L'Oréal's global distribution and research infrastructure.
