Novolizer dry powder inhaler

The Novolizer is an advanced, multidose, breath-actuated dry powder inhaler (DPI) designed for the treatment of respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It was developed through extensive research at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands by Dr. Anne de Boer and Prof. Erik Frijlink. The device is celebrated for its unique feedback mechanisms—optical, acoustic, and taste—that confirm to the patient that a sufficient dose has been inhaled properly.

While the technology originated in the Netherlands, the commercialization and brand ownership have shifted through several major pharmaceutical entities. It was notably a key product for the German company Meda Pharma (formerly Viatris GmbH and Co. KG). In 2016, the Swedish pharmaceutical company Meda AB was acquired by Mylan, which later merged with Pfizer's Upjohn division in 2020 to form Viatris Inc. Today, Viatris is the ultimate owner of the brand. Manufacturing is primarily conducted in Germany at sites such as Meda Manufacturing in Cologne and Bad Homburg, though distribution and local assembly involve various international partners.
