Patum Peperium, famously known as 'The Gentleman's Relish,' is a historic British anchovy paste first created in 1828 by John Osborn. Originally unveiled at the Paris Food Shows where it won prestigious accolades, the recipe remains a closely guarded secret, reportedly known to only one employee at a time. The brand was historically produced in England, most notably in Elsenham, Hertfordshire.

In recent years, production moved to Poland, though the product is still managed by its British-based owner. The brand's identity is deeply rooted in 19th-century British culinary traditions, often associated with gentlemen's clubs and high-society savouries. Since 2001, the brand has been part of the AB World Foods portfolio, a subsidiary of Associated British Foods (ABF), which continues to market the product in its iconic (though now mostly plastic) tubs that mimic the original Victorian porcelain pots.
