The Flora brand was originally conceived in the United Kingdom during the 1960s by Unilever as a healthier alternative to butter made from vegetable oils. Flora has been a staple in British households for decades.

In 2018, Unilever divested its spreads division to global investment firm KKR, which established the business under the name Upfield (later rebranded as Flora Food Group). The ultimate parent company is Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR), headquartered in New York, United States, operating locally in the UK through Flora Food Group.
