The brand originated in 1928 when it was created by the Hoberg Paper Company in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It earned its name after an employee described the embossing as looking 'charming'.

In 1957, Procter & Gamble (P&G) acquired the Charmin Paper Company, significantly investing in the brand's formula, softness, and advertising. Today, Charmin remains a core brand under the global consumer goods conglomerate Procter & Gamble, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.
