The Vicks brand traces its roots to 1894 in Greensboro, North Carolina, when pharmacist Lunsford Richardson developed his signature herbal salve, initially known as Vicks Family Remedies (later Richardson-Vicks Inc.). NyQuil was first introduced in 1966, followed by DayQuil to address daytime cold symptoms without sedation.

In 1985, Richardson-Vicks was acquired by the American multinational consumer goods corporation Procter & Gamble (P&G). Today, P&G manages global production and distribution, with North American products primarily manufactured in the United States and distributed in Canada via Procter & Gamble Inc.
