Dakine was founded in 1979 in Haiku, Maui, Hawaii, by Rob Kaplan, initially focusing on surf accessories. Over decades, it expanded into a premier brand for action sports enthusiasts, specializing in gear for snowboarding, mountain biking, and windsurfing. The name 'Dakine' is derived from the Hawaiian Pidgin 'da kine,' meaning 'the kind.'

While the brand maintains its creative roots in Hood River, Oregon, manufacturing is conducted across a global network of partners, primarily in Asia, including Vietnam and China, to support its wide range of technical backpacks and luggage.

Ownership of the brand has transitioned several times, from Billabong to Altamont Capital Partners. Today, the brand is owned by Marquee Brands and operates globally with distribution managed by various partners like Liberated Brands to maintain its technical performance status.
