Waterstones is the United Kingdom's leading high street bookseller, recognized for its iconic presence in city centers and its commitment to physical bookselling. Founded in 1982 by Tim Waterstone, the brand revolutionized the industry by creating large-scale bookstores with late opening hours and highly knowledgeable staff, distinct from the smaller, more traditional shops of the era. Over the decades, it has grown through the acquisition of competitors such as Dillons and Ottakar's.

Today, Waterstones operates hundreds of shops across the UK and Ireland, and has a small international presence. While the products sold (books) are manufactured by various publishers globally, the retail brand itself is a staple of British commercial culture. Its flagship store on Piccadilly in London remains the largest bookstore in Europe.

Since 2018, the company has been owned by the private equity firm Elliott Management Corporation. Under this ownership, Waterstones also acquired the American bookstore giant Barnes & Noble, placing both major English-language booksellers under the same corporate umbrella. The management strategy focuses on decentralizing shop control, allowing individual bookshops to curate their stock based on local community tastes.
