Sailfish OS

Sailfish OS is a European mobile operating system developed by Jolla Ltd. and originally launched in 2013. It is uniquely built upon the foundations of MeeGo, an open-source project previously spearheaded by Nokia and Intel. The operating system distinguishes itself through its gesture-based interface and its roots in the Mer project and the Linux kernel, offering an alternative to dominant American-based mobile ecosystems.

Headquartered in Tampere and Helsinki, Finland, Jolla was founded by a core team of former Nokia employees who sought to continue the legacy of the MeeGo platform after Nokia shifted its strategy toward Windows Phone. While the core software development occurs in Finland, the OS has been licensed for use in various hardware projects across the globe, including regional initiatives in Russia and South America aimed at digital sovereignty. The platform remains one of the few independent mobile OS alternatives with a strong emphasis on privacy and European technological independence.
