CEC Bank is the oldest financial institution in Romania, boasting a rich heritage that dates back to the mid-19th century. Originally established as a public savings bank, it has evolved into a modern commercial bank while remaining entirely under state ownership. This unique position allows it to maintain one of the largest branch networks in Romania, serving both urban and rural populations.
Throughout its history, the bank underwent several structural changes, most notably in 2008 when it rebranded from Casa de Economii și Consemnațiuni to the more modern name, CEC Bank. Despite the liberalization of the Romanian banking sector and the entry of numerous foreign banking groups, CEC remains a cornerstone of the national economy, focusing on supporting SMEs, the agricultural sector, and private individuals.
Today, CEC Bank is fully owned by the Romanian State through the Ministry of Public Finance. As a state-owned entity, its strategic decisions are often aligned with national economic development goals, and it continues to be a primary choice for Romanian citizens seeking a stable, locally-managed financial partner.
