Sakata is a heritage brand that traces its roots back over 50 years to the village of Sakata in Japan. It was originally founded by two brothers who perfected the 'usu-yaki' style of rice cracker, a traditional Japanese snack known for its thin, crispy texture.

In the 1990s, the brand transitioned into an Australian icon after being acquired by The Smith's Snackfood Company. Since then, Sakata has become a staple in Australian pantries, famously known for its catchy advertising jingles and gluten-free snack range. Today, the brand is part of the global PepsiCo portfolio, following PepsiCo's acquisition of Smith's. While the recipe remains faithful to its Japanese origins, the products sold in Australia are predominantly locally manufactured at PepsiCo's facilities using Australian-grown rice.
