This ceramic piece is a traditional decorative bottle representing 'Gula' (Gluttony), part of a famous series illustrating the Seven Deadly Sins. These bottles were originally created by the Figueiredo de Pias pottery studio, located in the Alentejo region of Portugal. The design typically features a pig-like or grotesque character, symbolizing the sin of gluttony, and was often used to store local wine or spirits.
Manufacturing remains deeply rooted in the artisanal traditions of Pias, Serpa. While the original pottery studio may have changed hands or scaled down over decades, these items are quintessential examples of Portuguese folk art ceramics. They are highly collectible and represent the cultural heritage of Alentejo craftsmanship.
