Ocean Spray is a prominent American brand specializing in fruit-based beverages and snacks, most notably cranberry and grapefruit products. The brand is unique in that it is not owned by a single large corporation but is instead an agricultural cooperative. This means the company is owned and operated by over 700 cranberry and grapefruit growers across the United States, Canada, and Chile.
Originally founded in 1930 as Cranberry Canners, Inc., the brand was the result of a collaboration between three independent cranberry growers: Marcus L. Urann, Elizabeth F. Lee, and John C. Makepeace. Their goal was to create innovative cranberry products to ensure a year-round market for their crops. Since then, Ocean Spray has been credited with several industry firsts, including the introduction of the first juice blend and the first juice boxes.
While headquartered in Lakeville-Middleboro, Massachusetts, Ocean Spray products are manufactured in multiple locations to serve global markets. The cooperative operates its own processing plants and juice-filling facilities in states like Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Nevada, Texas, and Pennsylvania, as well as international sites in Canada and Chile. This diverse production footprint allows them to source fresh berries from their member-farmers and process them close to the origin, ensuring high quality and shelf stability for their widely recognized bottled juices and Craisins.
