Skyr Icelandic-style Yogurt

Skyr is a traditional Icelandic cultured dairy product that has been a staple of the Icelandic diet for over a thousand years. While historically produced on small farms across Iceland, it gained international popularity in the 21st century due to its high protein content and thick, creamy texture. Today, it is manufactured in various countries including Iceland, the United States, and across Europe under several different brand labels.

The most prominent global brand responsible for popularizing Skyr internationally is Icelandic Provisions and MS Iceland Dairies (Mjólkursamsalan). MS Iceland Dairies is a cooperative owned by over 600 family-run dairy farms in Iceland. In international markets, Arla Foods also produces a significant volume of Skyr-style products. The ownership structure remains rooted in Icelandic cooperative traditions for domestic brands, while multinational dairy giants handle much of the international distribution and production.
