Founded by Ericus Gerhardus Verkade in Zaandam, the company initially focused on bread and rusks before expanding into the biscuits and chocolate that made it a household name. Over the decades, the ownership of Verkade has transitioned through several major food conglomerates. After being part of United Biscuits for many years, it was eventually acquired by Pladis, a global confectionery giant. While much of the production remains centered in the Netherlands to maintain its authentic quality, the brand now operates under the umbrella of a Turkish-headquartered multinational, ensuring its products reach markets far beyond its original home in Zaandam.
