The brand was founded in 1899 in Bad Schwartau, Germany, by the brothers Paul and Otto Fromm. While it originally started with various products including honey and plum butter, it eventually specialized in jams and fruit spreads. In 1968, Ursula Oetker took control of the company, and her son Dr. Arend Oetker led its expansion into a market leader.

Since 2002, Schwartauer Werke has been a key part of the Swiss-based Hero Group. Although it is now owned by an international corporation, the production facilities remain rooted in Bad Schwartau, Schleswig-Holstein, ensuring that the brand maintains its local heritage and manufacturing quality.
